The Historic Heart of Dubai

While Dubai is known for its skyscrapers and luxury, the city’s soul is in its old quarters along Dubai Creek. This area offers a glimpse of what Dubai looked like before the oil boom — narrow lanes, wind-tower houses, bustling souks, and the creek that has been the city’s lifeline for centuries.

Starting Point: Al Fahidi Historical District

Begin at Al Fahidi Historical District (also called Al Bastakiya). This is one of the oldest residential areas in Dubai, with restored buildings featuring traditional wind towers — an early form of air conditioning.

What to see here:

  • Dubai Museum (Al Fahidi Fort) — Housed in a fort built in 1787, this museum tells the story of Dubai before oil. (Check whether it is currently open, as renovations may occur.)
  • Coffee Museum — A small museum dedicated to the history of coffee in the region.
  • Majlis Gallery — One of Dubai’s oldest art galleries, showcasing local and regional artists.
  • XVA Gallery and Cafe — A contemporary art gallery and cafe in a restored courtyard house.

Dubai Creek and the Abra Ride

Walk from Al Fahidi to the Bur Dubai abra station on the creek. For 1 AED, you can cross the creek on a traditional abra — a wooden boat that has been ferrying passengers across the creek for decades. The ride takes about 5 minutes and offers excellent photo opportunities.

Deira Side: Gold Souk and Spice Souk

Once across the creek, you are in Deira. Two souks (traditional markets) are within walking distance:

Gold Souk

The Gold Souk is one of the largest gold markets in the world, with over 300 retailers. Even if you are not buying, walking through the souk is an experience — dazzling displays of gold jewelry, diamonds, and precious stones in every shop window.

Tips:

  • Prices are based on the daily gold rate plus a making charge, which is negotiable.
  • Only buy from established shops with proper receipts.
  • Cash often gets better prices than cards.

Spice Souk

A short walk from the Gold Souk, the Spice Souk offers aromatic spices, herbs, incense, and traditional medicines. The smells of frankincense, saffron, and dried rose petals fill the narrow lanes.
