Golden Zaan Hotel

While the hotel is officially located in Zaandam, it's very close to public transportation and within 20 minutes you're in Amsterdam. Great way to save on accommodations

Liked: The picture looked much better. In reality, it was not as good as expected.

None of the items that were promised on the website were present. No fridge, no TV, no queensize bed. In addition the floor and windowsill were really dirty and some light fittings had no bulb. The bathroom was very smelly.

The first stop on a trip with my wife and teenage daughters was a disappointment. Generally I am very accommodating and do not have high expectations when traveling/staying in hotels etc. That said, this place featured an unclean windowless room, a very high local tax (maybe legit?), and a dodgy fellow who called himself *** running the “operation.” Lots of interesting characters hanging out in the small lobby at all hours, trash left under beds, tiny bathroom with moldy curtain. Worst of all, for the second of the two nights we stayed, I had accidentally double-booked for two rooms. The hotel never responded to multiple calls, emails, and WhatsApp posts, nor did he (seemed to be only employee?) assist in resolving the matter in person. I tried for the three months prior to the stay to address this, finally going through my bank and regaining the funds that way, only to have them taken out again because “the hotel has declined to waive any cancellation fees and will apply its standard policy. Consequently, the original booking stands as confirmed: no refunds or modifications are allowed.” A sad and embarrassing experience all around, a blemish in an otherwise fabulous trip.

Liked: Great location, great design of the hotel. The wellness facilities were great. The staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable.

Great location to explore the surrounding areas by bike and also a quick train ride into Amsterdam. Granted the rooms could do with being decorated but it was comparable to a dated Travelodge and as such served it's purpose and at a really good price. It's was quiet, the beds were comfortable and the shower was decent.
