Kelburne Estate

Liked: Our one bedroom bungalow at Kelburne had the most spectacular view - you can see for miles and miles. And it's so quiet - the only noises we heard were from birds and other wildlife. On top of this the bed was very comforable and the service and food were outstanding. Breakfast was great - I finally got to eat hoppers! And we ate both evening meals here and they were excellent. The second day I suggested a few vegetables we particulary liked - presuming that they would not all be available and also that our chef would choose a subset from the list - and he procured nearly all of them, resulting in an embarrassment of riches on our second night! We didn't do much other than a short walk into the village of Haputale through the tea fields (partly to get some gin and tonic and limes as Kelburne doesn't serve alcohol); the main and intense pleasure of our stay came from just hanging out on our private terrace and enjoying the view and the landscape and the wildlife - and the gorgeous sunsets. It felt very private, peaceful and romantic.

Disliked: Nothing. There were a few powercuts when we there and our shower didn't work on the second day, so we were invited to shower in another near bungalow - but none of this impinged on our enjoyment of this rather magical place.

Liked: Location, views,calmness, food, gardens staff etc.

Disliked: The long-term maintenance of the cottage needed some attention.

Liked: Lovely old world tea plantation set up high with fantastic views. The staff were so friendly and made our stay feel like a home away from home. The food was excellent we loved it.

Liked: A breathtaking view that keeps changing with the migrating mist never gets you bored..

Disliked: The well preserved old world charm, makes you feel how the original owners may have felt living in this place almost a hundred years ago.

Liked: The location and the views are just incredible and if you are interested in nature, there is a wide variety of birds in the gardens of the estate itself. The staff are so kind and keen to help. And the food is great!

Liked: Everything! The bungalows were just perfect, the views are even better. The dinner the chef made us was some of the best Sri Lankan food we’ve ever had. The staff were all lovely too.

Disliked: Nothing
