Mad Monkey Backpackers on Broadway

Liked: Free gym passes to Anytime Fitness, fun nightly events, and very friendly staff! The hostel is in a great location close to Victoria Park and Broadway Shopping Centre.

I booked a room for one night on 21/03 for the Asian Cup final. I checked in to an 8 bed dorm that afternoon and took the only bed that was free. After being in the room that afternoon, I left to go to the game. I then returned that night to discover that my belongings (which I'd left on the bed to signal that it was taken) had been removed by staff and someone else put in that bed. I had to wake the poor person in my bed, who had no idea what was going on, to ask if they knew where my stuff was and they didn't know. All 8 beds in the dorm were now taken and with a key only for that room I had nowhere to go and ended up having to just stroll around Sydney all night till my flight the next morning. Luckily, I discovered my belongings at reception so I was able to grab those (no attempt at all was made by the hostel to contact me about any of this of course). Despite paying for a bed for the night I was instead made to wander the streets all night. I've never had such an atrocious experience with anywhere I've stayed and I'll be avoiding this place like the plague and advising others to do the same. Absolutely piss poor.

Liked: The place was conveniently located and bathrooms reasonable

Disliked: There were relics left under my bed that seemed to have been there for month, and Soo much weed being prepped in the lobby smoked at front all night long

Unfortunately, my experience was extremely disappointing and uncomfortable. For both nights of my stay, I was unable to sleep properly due to an apparent issue with the bed sheets. From the moment I got into bed, I experienced constant itching, which strongly suggests that something was wrong with the bedding. As there was no immediate solution available, I was left with no choice but to sleep on my own towels without any blankets to cover myself. In addition, there was a persistent noise coming from outside the bedroom window area. To clarify, I am not referring to hallway noise, but a constant disturbance from outside that made it very difficult to rest. The cleanliness of the property was also unacceptable. The bedroom's shelves were dusty, and the condition of the bathroom, as well as the overall state of the accommodation, was extremely poor.

Liked: I stayed at Mad Monkey Hostel in Sydney from 6 to 15 February while attending the APSS conference, which took place at the University of Sydney, only about a ten-minute walk from the hostel. What I particularly appreciated about this accommodation was its affordability, at just £20 per night, which made my stay very economical. The location was also excellent. Situated on Broadway, it is very close to the city centre and within easy reach of Central Station, making travel around Sydney straightforward. Bus stops are only a minute away from the hostel, providing convenient access to other parts of the city. In addition, Broadway Sydney Shopping Centre is nearby, where almost everything one might need can be found.

Disliked: The kitchen was poorly maintained and often unclean. With only three tables seating eighteen people in total, residents frequently had to wait to prepare meals. The tables, floor, and sinks were regularly dirty, and fridge space was extremely limited. Overall, the kitchen facilities need considerable improvement. The shared room, with four bunk beds accommodating eight people, felt overcrowded and uncomfortable. There was little personal space, and even changing clothes required leaving the room. The lobby was also very small, with seating for only a few people. In addition, noise from other residents at night and early in the morning was an issue, which I had to report more than once. Essentially, the hostel is suitable only as a basic place to sleep.

Liked: I love the location and the events!

Disliked: I would stay here again!
