About this activity
Explore the vibrant underwater world of Nusa Penida on this unique tour dedicated to coral restoration. Witness the incredible transformation of a once-damaged reef, now home to colorful Acropora corals and a thriving fish community. Swim out from the shore to access the restoration site and coral nursery, where years of dedicated work have revitalized this precious marine habitat. Your participation not only allows you to enjoy this natural beauty but also contributes to ongoing coral restoration efforts and supports the local community through guide earnings.
- Discover a thriving coral reef, restored after years of effort - Swim to a shallow restoration site filled with colorful coral - All proceeds support coral restoration with Ocean Gardener - Tour starts at 9am, led by a local Indonesian marine biologist
What you will do
We'll start with a presentation of what happened in Ped, where boat anchors and seaweed farming destroyed the reefs. Finally the fishermen community came together with Ocean Gardener to start replanting corals. You will learn about coral biology, the shapes they can form, Hard vs Soft Corals and the threats coral reefs face today. We will then cover coral reproduction and how coral farming and restoration works. We will then gear up and snorkel the Ocean Gardener coral nursery. With your snorkel and fins, we'll head out to the coral nursery. Your guide will point out specific corals. All equipment is included, so you just show up ready to learn and explore! No boat needed - we will gear up on shore and swim to the reef during low tide. Perfect for beginners! You will work with your local marine biologist to fragment a coral cutting from a donor colony and attach it to a rope so the coral has something to anchor to continuing growing. The coral ropes will replaced back into the nursery. We will continue monitoring your colony and subsequently, when the colony is large enough, we will outplant them to restore the surrounding reefs. A minimum of 2 people is needed for the tour.
