About this activity
This is a heritage tour, with the elements of a dark tour, which tells the story of World War II in Split. It is developed with storytelling method, which allows guests to get a better sense of the atmosphere. You'll find out what caused of the War in this area, who were the oppressors, whose side were the citizens on and what ultimately led to the end of the War. Great emphasis is placed on the human aspect of war, while standing true to historical facts. You'll learn how the War affected the lives of ordinary people by hearing stories about fights, resistance, sacrifices and losses. In addition, you'll see where the bomb shelters were, who were the hidden heroes, what happened with the Jewish community that has been active in Split for centuries. During the tour, photographs of buildings that were damaged or destroyed will be provided. The photographs are the property of the Museum of the City of Split and are kept in the archives; but for this tour I have exclusive rights to use.
What to expect
This is where we meet and start the tour. You will find out when, where and why did the war in Split started.
The green market of the town. Here I will tell you about the most horrific bombing in Split.
Entrance to Diocletian's Palace from the east.
See the ancient palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian to learn which parts of it were attacked during the war.
Visit the main square of the city to find out what terrible events took place there during the war.
Main street of the town is also a witness to the horrors of war.
Place where we end the tour and where you will learn about prisons and executions during the war.
Pickup & meeting point
You can choose either hotel/location pickup or to meet the guide at the start point.
Pickup starts about 30 minutes before the departure time.
The starting point is located at the beginning of the waterfront, next to the big red letters Split. It is located just behind the taxi stand and the beginning of the parking lot. But we can always arrange another meeting place if it's easier for you.
The tour ends at Trg Republike - Prokurative square. We remain in the old historical center of Split and near the promenade.
