About Mumbai
Mumbai is India’s financial capital and the home of Bollywood, a crowded, energetic city on a peninsula facing the Arabian Sea. Its southern tip holds the colonial landmarks — the Gateway of India, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (a UNESCO site) and the Art Deco sweep of Marine Drive.
Further north, Bandra and Juhu are known for cafés, sea-facing promenades and film-industry neighbourhoods, while ferries from the Gateway run to the rock-cut Elephanta Caves. Traffic is heavy, so choosing a base near the places you plan to visit makes a big difference.

Best time to visit Mumbai
November to February is the most pleasant period, with warm, drier days. The monsoon from June to September brings very heavy rain and occasional flooding, and ferries to Elephanta may be suspended. March to May is hot and humid.
Getting around Mumbai
Suburban trains are the fastest way north–south but are extremely crowded at peak hours. The Mumbai Metro lines, including the underground Aqua Line, taxis and ride-hailing cover much of the city; auto-rickshaws operate only in the suburbs.
Mumbai travel tips
- Avoid suburban trains at rush hour; if you do ride, the first-class carriages and the ladies’ compartments are less crowded.
- Ferries to Elephanta Caves leave from the Gateway of India; the caves are closed on Mondays.
- Walk Marine Drive at sunset for the best views, then continue to Girgaon Chowpatty for street food.
- Pick a hotel near the areas you will spend most time in — crossing the city by road can take well over an hour.
