Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: Visitor Guide
A guide to visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi: opening hours, dress code, what to see, photography rules, and practical tips.
One of the World’s Largest Mosques
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world and Abu Dhabi’s most visited landmark. Completed in 2007, it was commissioned by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE. The mosque blends Islamic architectural styles from around the world, using materials and artisans from Morocco, Turkey, India, and beyond.
What to See
The Main Prayer Hall
The prayer hall features the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet, woven in Iran over two years. The hall is illuminated by chandeliers — one of which is among the largest in the world, containing millions of Swarovski crystals.
The Courtyard
The white marble courtyard is one of the most photographed spaces in the mosque. The floral inlays in the marble floor are stunning in their detail and scale.
The Reflecting Pools
The mosque is surrounded by reflecting pools that create stunning mirror images, especially at sunset and after dark when the mosque is illuminated.
The Qibla Wall
The wall facing Mecca features 99 names of Allah (Asma’ Allah al-Husna) in traditional Arabic calligraphy, illuminated with fiber-optic lighting.
