Why Visit Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and the largest emirate by area. While Dubai gets more tourists, Abu Dhabi offers a more relaxed, cultural experience with world-class museums, stunning architecture, and major theme parks. The city is cleaner, less crowded, and has a more authentic Emirati feel.

Top Attractions

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

One of the world’s largest mosques and Abu Dhabi’s most iconic landmark. Open to non-Muslim visitors outside prayer times. See our Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque guide for visiting tips.

Yas Island

A man-made entertainment island with four theme parks: Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros. World, and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. See our Yas Island guide for details.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

A universal museum on Saadiyat Island featuring art and artifacts from around the world. The building itself, designed by Jean Nouvel, is a masterpiece with its iconic silver dome that creates a “rain of light” effect.

Abu Dhabi Corniche

An 8-kilometer waterfront promenade with beaches, parks, cafes, and a children’s play area. Free to walk and a great place for an evening stroll.

Qasr Al Hosn

The oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi, now a museum telling the story of the city’s history. The fort has been beautifully restored and offers insight into Abu Dhabi’s origins.

How to Get Around

  • Taxi: The easiest way to get around Abu Dhabi. Metered, affordable, and widely available.
  • Bus: Abu Dhabi has a public bus network, but it is less extensive than Dubai’s Metro. Fares are low.
  • Ride-hailing: Uber and local app Careem operate in Abu Dhabi.
  • Car rental: A good option if you want to explore beyond the city, but not necessary for central Abu Dhabi.

When to Visit

Like Dubai, the best time to visit Abu Dhabi is from November to March, when temperatures are pleasant (24-30°C). Summer months (June-September) are extremely hot, but indoor attractions remain open.

Day Trip from Dubai

Abu Dhabi is approximately 130 kilometers from Dubai, about 90 minutes by car. You can also take an intercity bus or hire a taxi. See our Abu Dhabi to Dubai transport guide for options.

Practical Tips

  • Dress code: Abu Dhabi is slightly more conservative than Dubai. Modest dress (covering shoulders and knees) is expected in public spaces and required in the mosque.
  • Alcohol: Available in hotel restaurants and bars but not in standalone restaurants. Do not drink in public spaces.
  • Friday: Many attractions have modified hours on Friday mornings due to Friday prayers.
  • Currency: Same as Dubai — UAE Dirham (AED).
