Traveling Between Abu Dhabi and Dubai

Abu Dhabi and Dubai are the two largest cities in the UAE, about 130 kilometers apart. Whether you are staying in one city and visiting the other, or traveling between the two for business, there are several transport options.

By Bus

The intercity bus is the most affordable option:

  • Route: Buses depart from Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station to Al Ghubaiba Bus Station in Dubai.
  • Frequency: Buses run regularly throughout the day, approximately every 20-30 minutes.
  • Duration: About 2 hours, depending on traffic.
  • Cost: Around 25 AED per person.
  • Payment: Use a Nol card (the same card used on Dubai public transport).

The buses are air-conditioned and comfortable. There is a separate seating area for women and families.

By Taxi

  • Duration: About 90 minutes via the E11 highway.
  • Cost: Approximately 250-350 AED depending on traffic and taxi company.
  • Availability: Taxis are available from both cities. You can also book through ride-hailing apps like Uber or Careem.
  • Tip: Agree on the fare or ensure the meter is running. Intercity taxi rates may differ from city taxi rates.

By Car

If you have a rental car:

  • Route: Take the E11 highway (Sheikh Zayed Road) directly between the two cities.
  • Duration: About 90 minutes in normal traffic. Add 30-60 minutes during rush hours (7-9 AM, 5-8 PM).
  • Tolls: Salik toll gates in Dubai charge 4 AED per crossing. Abu Dhabi does not currently have tolls.
  • Parking: Both cities have ample parking, though Dubai Marina and Downtown can be challenging during peak hours.

By Etihad Rail (Future)

The Etihad Rail network is being developed to connect major UAE cities, including Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The passenger service is being rolled out in phases. Check the official Etihad Rail website for the latest updates on passenger services.

Tips

  • Rush hour: Avoid traveling between 7-9 AM and 5-8 PM when traffic is heaviest.
  • Weekend: Friday and Saturday can be busier, especially in the afternoon.
  • Airport transfers: If flying into Abu Dhabi and staying in Dubai (or vice versa), allow extra time for the intercity journey.
