Dubai Desert Safari Guide
A desert safari is the most booked experience in Dubai, but tours vary widely in vehicle, route and camp. This guide explains the main types so you can choose, and lists live safaris you can book with our activity partner.
Types of desert safari
Evening safari
The classic option: an afternoon hotel pickup, dune driving in a 4x4, a stop for sunset, then a desert camp with a buffet or barbecue dinner and entertainment. Camel rides and sandboarding are often included.
Morning safari
Shorter and cooler in summer: dune driving, sandboarding and sometimes a camel ride, back by lunchtime. No dinner or camp show.
Overnight safari
The evening programme plus a night at the camp and breakfast. A good choice for stargazing away from the city lights.
Quad bikes and dune buggies
Self-drive sessions in the dunes, booked on their own or added to a safari. Check age and licence rules before you book.
Conservation and heritage safaris
Tours inside the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve are limited to licensed operators, often use vintage Land Rovers, and focus on wildlife and Bedouin heritage rather than dune bashing.
Hot-air balloon
Sunrise flights over the desert, usually with an early-morning hotel pickup and breakfast.
Where do desert safaris go?
Most tours drive 45–60 minutes from central Dubai to the dunes off the Dubai–Hatta and Al Ain roads. The Lahbab area is known for its tall red dunes, and camps in the Al Awir and Margham areas host most evening programmes. Conservation-focused tours go to the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, where driving is controlled.
How to choose a safari
Shared or private vehicle
Shared 4x4s are cheaper; a private car lets you set the pace and suits families with young children.
Pickup area
Check that pickup covers your hotel’s area — some tours collect only from central districts.
What is included
Check the dinner type, drinks, camel ride, sandboarding and quad time. The listing shows exactly what each operator includes.
Group and camp size
Smaller camps feel less crowded. Reviews usually mention crowding and dinner quality.
Cancellation terms
Many tours offer free cancellation up to a set time before the start — useful if the weather changes.
Is dune bashing suitable for everyone?
Fast dune driving is bumpy. Operators generally advise pregnant travellers and people with back, neck or heart conditions not to take part, and set minimum ages for young children. Many will drive a gentler route on request, or you can choose a camp-only transfer, a morning camel trek or a conservation safari instead.
What to wear and bring
Clothing
Light, loose clothing that covers shoulders and knees, closed shoes or sandals you do not mind filling with sand, and a layer for winter evenings, which get cool in the desert.
Sun and sand
Sunglasses, sunscreen and a scarf to keep sand off your face during sandboarding.
Motion sickness
If you are prone to it, sit in the front, eat lightly beforehand and tell the driver.
Ramadan
Programmes can change during Ramadan — entertainment and some services may be limited. Check the listing or ask the operator.

Frequently asked questions
How long is a Dubai desert safari?
Evening safaris usually take around six hours including hotel pickup and drop-off. Morning safaris are shorter, and overnight safaris return the next morning.
Which is better, morning or evening desert safari?
The evening safari is the full experience with sunset, dinner and a camp show. The morning safari is shorter and cooler, which suits summer visits and travellers who only want the dunes.
Is desert safari safe for kids?
Many families take evening safaris. Operators set minimum ages for dune driving, and a private vehicle or gentler route is a good option with young children.
Do desert safaris include hotel pickup?
Most do, from hotels in central Dubai. Each listing shows the pickup areas and times.
